She's not conceited, nor is she selfish, a bimbo or a bitch. At least, this is what she will tell you and what she definitely tells herself, and yet, as she sits in the Knockouts dressing room preparing for tonight's show, she is all alone. The dressing room is large and fit to house all of the women on the TNA roster, but here we are and it is completely empty, save for Angelina Love.
In a landscape where The Dollhouse have formed a dangerous alliance, where friends like Brooke and Rebel are banding together, where even hated rivals Gail Kim and Awesome Kong have joined forces, having someone to watch your back seems not just a clever thing to do but an essential one. So why then is the former six-time Knockouts Champion alone in this landscape?
"Because she's a phony bitch who can't be trusted," one former Knockout has been quoted as saying.
Okay, well maybe, but is there more to it than that?
"Yeah, maybe there is," the ex-Knockout continued. "I mean, if she did what she did to Velvet Sky, who knows what she's capable of doing?"
Ah yes, if there is a metaphorical elephant in the Knockouts locker room, it's Velvet Sky – and Angelina Love isn't saying much about it.
"I don't want to talk about Velvet; I want to talk about me," she says as she applies her makeup in the mirror. "People have been saying so much about me for so long that I stopped listening years ago. It's jealousy, plain and simple. People in this business call me a bitch like it's a bad thing, but guess what?" She trails off as she purses her blood red lips together, ensuring her lipstick is even.
"You ever read that book by Stephen King, Dolores Claiborne?" she continues. "There's a line in that book that says sometimes being a bitch is all a woman has to hold onto. Have I been mean to people? Okay, maybe I have, but I did what I had to do to survive. I'm not a six-time champ for nothing."
This may be a fair point and there is no arguing that Angelina is one of the most successful TNA Knockouts ever, but has there been a price to pay for her actions? It's no secret that once upon a time Angelina and Velvet were total BFF's, inseparable. Those days, however, seem to be long gone. Many people thought Velvet Sky was long gone too, but recently we have seen the re-emergence of a new, darker, more intense Velvet Sky and she seems hell bent on revenge against Angelina Love.
It doesn't really come as a surprise. After all, when The Beautiful People's then-ally, Robbie E was in danger of getting the "fired" briefcase after the Feast or Fired match, it was Velvet who took the fall for him, and where was her best friend in all of this? Probably counting her lucky stars that it wasn't her who had been put in that position. Of course, this was not the first time the beautiful blondes had been wrenched apart.
"Okay, you wanna talk about Velvet?" Angelina snaps, already going back on her word of not talking about Velvet."Fine, why don't we talk about 2009? Why don't we talk about how when I was tied up with visa issues and wasn't able to wrestle in the United States, what my so-called BFF was doing?"
Before I can answer, Angelina turns to me – her eyes, a storm grey color, sharp and accusing – and answers for me: "While I was sitting at home, not knowing when I was going to wrestle again, Miss Velvet was parading around with Madison Rayne and Lacey Von Erich trying to make money off of my legacy. Let's not forget, I was the first Beautiful Person to be Knockouts Champion, not Velvet Sky. She was the first one to turn her back on me, not the other way around..."
At this point she trails off and I can tell she is very angry. She is breathing deeply, her breasts rising and falling rapidly. I can see why men find this woman so alluring, but also why so many women are afraid of her.
"...But I don't want to talk about Velvet," she finishes.
I'm only afforded a little more time with Angelina, as she finishes her hair and makeup and prepares for her match. During our remaining time Angelina talks about Angelina...a lot. She talks about what she has accomplished so far and what she is sure she will accomplish in the future. As I listen, I find myself believing a lot of what she says. Maybe this is part of the Angelina charm – it's a charm that can snare a wolf, but maybe it's more than that.
Maybe she's right; maybe in this story of bickering, former friends, Angelina is the wronged party. The only thing that makes me doubt this theory is the sheer hatred in the eyes of Velvet Sky, for make no mistake, Sky is a woman scorned and she seems determined to make Love pay for what the Canadian cutie has done. In many ways, Velvet Sky is saying more by not talking than Angelina Love is by constantly talking.
So is she a bitch? Maybe. Is she conceited? Definitely. But Angelina Love is also beautiful and talented – very talented – and if Velvet Sky thinks she can take down the six-time champ, then she is going to have her work cut out for her. This is a melodrama that I cannot wait to see play out in the six-sided ring and as I bid farewell to Angelina, she takes little notice of me. She simply continues to talk about herself whilst checking her considerable looks in the mirror.
It is perhaps this conceit that may be her ultimate downfall, because that is why she fails to notice Velvet Sky stalk up behind her. It is only when the reflection of Sky invades Love's precious mirror space that she is aware that she is now no longer alone.
As I make my way down the hall, I hear a scream coming from the Knockouts locker room but I don't turn back. I guess there's no turning back for anyone in this tale of friendship gone bad.
